Genesis 12:4-9

Text:   Genesis 12:4-9

Intro: The Christian life is like a pilgrimage, (1 Pet. 2:11). We are on a journey that began when we got saved and will continue until Heaven.

I.  ABRAM'S OBEDIENCE (Gen.12:4-5) (1 Sam.15:22)

2.  ABRAM'S OPPOSITION    (Genesis 12:4-6)  Abram wasn't going to find everything "smooth sailing". It would be difficult.
   A)   The Days Opposed Him - V4 says that Abram was 75 years old when he left on his pilgrimage.
   B)   The Darkness Opposed Him - V6 The Canaanites were a godless people, much more wicked than those he left behind in Ur.
   C)   The Distance Opposed Him - V 5-6, Haran to Beersheba, was about 500 miles. He didn't stop. He just kept on going until he had seen everything there was to see in Canaan land.
   D)    The Duties Opposed Him - He had his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot to look after. He had servants, flocks, herds and all that came along with him to look after. (Heb. 11:1)

3.   ABRAM'S OPPORTUNITIES   (Gen.12:7-9)
   A)  To Experience God's Promises – He could travel knowing that every square inch of ground was his and his children's forever! (Acts7:5)   See the future by faith, as though it were a reality today!
   B)  To Enjoy God's Presence - God walked with him!
       1)  In His Worship – Abraham setup his tent and built an altar.
       2)  In His Wanderings - Abraham determined to include God.
       3)   In His Ways – Abram put his tent between Bethel and Hai.
   C)   To Enter God's Place - This passage closes with Abraham traveling on with the Lord. He was headed somewhere. (Heb.11:8-16).    The life of Abraham is a study in faith filled living. Why? Because He lived on a higher plane than other men. He lived in Heaven while his feet walked on the earth!
